  1. Long bow: People during the Stone Age used this type of bow for hunting purposes. So we can guess that this type of bow is one of the oldest types of bows. These bows are also known as English Bows. The English Army used this type of bows for the wars. They used to use these as long as rifles were invented. They are famous for the D-shaped design and are larger than standard type of bows.
  1. Compound bow: This type of bows are relatively modern bows and were invented 1960. A compound bow usually has a pulley on each limbs which holds the drawstring. Its mechanism is very much easy. So it is a one of the favorites among the elderly generation as it does not need so much energy. They are used mainly for hunting but some people use this for target practice. They work faster than the recurve and long bow. When you will use this for target shooting, different accessories are used.
  1. Recurve bow: Recurve bow is one of the ancient types of bows and is used in Olympics. This type of bow is limb shaped and is same as a long bow. It is known as a recurve bow as it is recurved shape like the limbs. The center this type of bow is curved towards the archer and tips curve away. If you are a beginner, this bow is perfect and they don’t need much strength to operate. It is much functional bow and much popular among beginners. This bow has a two end limbs, string and riser which helps to balance the bow.
  1. Cross bow: Crossbow is actually a combination of a compound and recurves bow. This type of bows are highly precise as they have a more extended range of firing than any other bows. They can be for both for target shooting practice and hunting purposes.

Design of Bows

One of the most basic types of bow is the long bow is made from a straight shaft. These bows have stability as well as additional power. They also have permanent curves for which the back of the bow is concave.

You can achieve extra power with a compound bow which is a mechanically assisted device. This makes the attachment of the bowstring to the pulleys system while other bows are attached to the tips.

On the other hand, a recurved bow has three parts. It has two flexible limbs which extends from the opposite ends of a rigid riser. The length of the bow is around 50-70 inches. The riser is about 20 inches long and it provides a comfortable handgrip and also a ledge for resting of the arrow.

The limbs of the bow are attached with the riser. They are removable which allows you to take apart the bow. This type of bow is very easy to transport and also to interchange limbs.

Materials Required for Making a Bow and Arrow

A bow can become a little brittle in the winter season if it is made of a piece of wood. When the bow is strung, it can also deform in the curved stage. When it deforms, the springiness decreases and loses power.

If bows are made from fiberglass, this problem can be solved but it has low performance. You can get the best results with composite materials.

They are made by gluing together via various wood layers, fiberglass/carbon fiber. The commonly used bows in the forest are maple, red elm, cedar, bamboo etc.

Long ago, bowstrings were made from twisted rawhide, sinew, gut, flax, hemp, silk etc. But now the strings of wooden longbows made of linen thread. Compound bows can be strung with the steel wire.

Bowstrings for the recurved bows are made from Dacron. It stretches less and wears well also. The nylon thread is wrapped with the bowstring in order to reinforce it.

The arrows are usually made of solid wood such as elm, ash, willow, cedar, oak etc. Hollow arrow shafts are made of materials such as fiberglass, aluminum, graphite, carbon fiber etc.

Turkey feathers are mounted upon the shaft near one end which makes the arrow spin and then slows down its path.

As these bows have better moisture resistance and durability, the plastic/molded rubber vanes have become much popular compared to natural feathers. A nock is placed at the back of arrow.

Arrowheads were made of bone, flint, horn, bronze/hardwood long back ago but they are usually made of steel nowadays. They have two to maximum six protruding blades. They even may bring the arrow’s shaft into a pointed or rounded end.

Making your own bow for hunting

The important thing to consider while making a bow is the type of bow which you are using. You should find out a solid hard piece of wood. The ideal types are teak, oak, lemon tree, ash etc and it should be around 6 feet long.

You should always ensure that the wood is free from any types of knots or twists and also is little thicker in center.

You can also use bamboo or cane but always make sure that they are not too much thick. Now it’s time to find out the natural curve of the stick which will help to find out that where you should place the most vital features.

You can find out the curve easily when you place it on the surface with one hand and then hold it with another hand. Then push slightly to the center direction. Now just determine the limbs and handhold.

Now make a mark approximately around three inches above and below the center point of the stick. Any point within the range of this region is known as the handhold and the upper limb is above them and the lower limb is below them.

Now just start shaping of the bow now. Just put one bow end on your foot and the press outward the other. Ensure that the belly of the bow is faced to your side. And always make sure that the bow is flexible.

The lower and upper limbs both should be curves similarly. They must be of the same diameter. For shaving off the wood from the belly of the bow, sharp objects might be used such as a knife or something similar.

Always be careful in case of carving the bow. You may make notches ranging from 1 to maximum 2 inches from the each side of the bow in order to hold the bow string in the right place.

Just start by cutting notches from sides and then curving round the belly of bow. You should choose a string which is not stretchy because the force generates from the twine. A fishing line or also an ordinary twine can be used.

You can also use thin hemp cord, nylon rope or other similar objects. Then take your string and make a loose loop out of that. The knots should be very strong at both ends of the bowstring.

Then slip this over the lower and after that, on upper limb. The string should be shorter compared to the length of inflexed bow. This will make both the bow and string stretched tightly.

After that, hold on the bow and pull the string as far as possible, downwards of course. It makes sure that both limbs of the bow bends evenly. After that shave off the bow and yayy! Your brand new self-made bow is ready to use for your next hunting trip.

Making an arrow

The important factor is finding the right type of sticks for making the perfect arrows. They must be as long as the bow can be drawn backwards. Always prefer dry and straight sticks. Then cut it smooth around.

To fit the bow string, carve a notch at the back tip of the arrow. You may use a knife to sharpen the arrow tip and harden the object with fire but make sure you don’t burn it.

An arrow head can be made with a glass, stone, bone, metal etc. Now carefully chip off the material you have chosen for arrow head and then fix it on the arrow tip. You can also do this via making a notch on the arrow tip and then putting in the head of the arrow.

Ensure that the arrow head is fixed properly with the arrow with the help of a cord/string. For keeping the balance of the bow, you also may need some other accessories such as a quiver, bow stand, bow cases, stabilizer etc.

After reading the above bow and arrow making procedure, you may think that making your own bow and arrow is a bit tough and also needs much patience but if you can make it, it will be totally worth it which you can feel during your next hunting trip!
